I am feeling nostalgic today. Is it because the sea in my hometown is getting cooler and the trees are crowned with gleaming yellow leaves? I am diving in the vortex of memories and the flow is transporting me back to when I was 16.
In the shady paths of our beautiful hometown park, I am walking along with Karina Fon Bodenblik, our energetic dog of Dalmatian breed. We are both trotting. Karina is waving her silky smooth ears, while I am waving my freshly curled locks.
Everything started years ago with Pongo and Perdita and my obsession for the book ‘101 Dalmatians. At that time our family owned already 2 cats and a dog, but none of them could convey the slightest aristocratic message. A Dalmatian could! With its dramatic black markings and elegant posture…it planted the seeds of a…fatal attraction in my young heart. Before we knew it, the dogs in the family were two- the tiny playful, hot-tempered puppy with aristocratic name conquered not only my heart, but also our home. Karina did not present herself in a Dalmatian print T shirt, but she definitely was inspirational for my teenage closet.
As a true synchronistic couple, we were ‘wearing’ matching outfits most of the time, a printed T shirt and a large metal choker necklace during our summer walks in the city, a red coat with ermine collar for a true royal touch during winters.
Fast forward some 24 years later…I am still attracted to black and white combos and…dogs. While my style personality in fact did not change with time and I absolutely love dramatic outfits, lifestyle, age and the breed of my dog are definitely different today.
Now I opt for a feminine, yet playful look when I wear a long see through black dress over black palazzo pants and a top in snake print, accentuated with a pair of vintage eye-catching earrings in black and white, a felt ascot hat in black and my preferred red lipstick.
Alternatively, I pick my favourite pleated chiffon maxi skirt and a strapless top in black, and upgrade this classic, sophisticated outfit with the help of some pearls and a bright red lipstick. Ideally I go bare feet :-), otherwise I choose a strappy flat sandal in black. The risky part if choosing to wear a pleated maxi skirt is understanding whether it is suitable or not for your body type. For a maxi skirt, the rule is to have long legs and that is not too difficult to determine :-). As for the pleats, a feminine and a bit old fashioned style, they are often a trend, but who can have the privilege to wear them? This is something you can discover during a Style Makeover, but let me give you a hint. If the pleats start from the waist and you have a little bump, which is otherwise sexy and appreciated, it will actually look bigger and most probably you will end up with a silhouette that you are not going to like. For instance I am that kind of girl and I prefer to choose a panelled pleated skirt.
The last look I decided to share with you today is a classic one with a twist. Adding a twist in a classic outfit makes me feel eternally stylish, but modern and fun at the same time. To begin with, what I am wearing is a crisp white zipper shirt and this gives me the possibility to wear it open with a funky tiger print top underneath. What you are seeing on the wrist is a Chanel pearl necklace worn as a bracelet. A beautiful scarf instantly upgrades an outfit and makes it more interesting, getting you a tiny bit closer to the absolute scarf-loving style icon Audrey Hepburn.
I hope you loved today’s time travel. Isn’t it fun to look back and wonder how-on-earth-you-could-go-out-dressed-like-that? What was your teenage closet like? I love chatting about style. If you love chatting about style too, remember to leave your comments below.
